Accessibility

An open invitation to every camper.

California for Better or Worse is built to WCAG 2.1 Level AA, the conformance level required by California's Unruh Civil Rights Act and ADA Title III. We test continuously and fix barriers as we find them.

Our commitment

This site exists so anyone planning a California camping trip can find a place to pitch a tent — regardless of disability. That includes folks using screen readers, voice control, switch devices, keyboards only, magnification, or reduced-motion settings.

Conformance target

  • Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA — the standard adopted by California courts under the Unruh Act and by the U.S. Department of Justice for ADA Title III websites.
  • California Government Code §7405 and §11135 — applicable to public-facing services in California.
  • Continuous monitoring with axe-core and Playwright across Chromium and WebKit at five viewports (390 px to 1920 px).

What we've done

  • Semantic landmarks (header, main, aside) and a "Skip to map" link for keyboard users.
  • All interactive elements reachable by keyboard, with a high-contrast 3 px focus ring.
  • Esc closes panels; Enter / Space activate map pins.
  • Color-contrast minimum 4.5:1 for body text and 3:1 for large text and UI components.
  • Filters announce their state changes to assistive tech via a live region.
  • prefers-reduced-motion disables non-essential animation.
  • Touch targets meet the 24 × 24 CSS-pixel minimum (WCAG 2.5.8).
  • Every outbound reservation link is validated automatically — no broken government links.

Known limitations

The map itself is provided by Google Maps. It is keyboard-navigable, but the underlying tiled-imagery experience is not exhaustively described to screen readers. Every campground in the map is also accessible as a textual list via the search field — type any park name to filter, then press Tab to navigate to the matching pins, or open the detail panel for full reservation links and amenity details in plain text.
